Polygamy is simply defined as, "The practice or condition of having many or multiple wives, at one time" (Random House College Dictionary, pg. 1628)
"Polygamy may be abhorrent to most Americans, but in the global community it is common, normal and accepted.'Although the percentage of men in the world who have more than one wife is relatively small, as many as a third of the world's population belongs to a community that allows it,' says Israeli anthropologist Joseph Ginat.'There are many plural marriages in Africa, the Middle East and in Asia,' said Ginat, professor of social and culture anthropology at the University of Haifa..." (Tribune, September 20, 1998).
2 Samuel 12:7 And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith YHWH Elohim of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul;
12:8 And I gave thee thy master's house, and thy master's wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such things.
Many leaders in the Old Covenant are described as having multiple wives. The Hebrew scriptures document approximately forty polygamists. Notable examples include Abraham, who bore for himself a child through his wife's maidservant; Jacob, who had fallen in love with Rachel, but was tricked into marrying her sister, Leah; David, who inherited his wives from Saul; and perhaps most famously, Solomon, who had more than 700 wives.
The Torah, Israelite's central text, includes a few specific regulations on the practice of polygamy, such as Exodus 21:10, which states that multiple wivess are not to diminish the status of the first wife (specifically, her right to food, clothing and conjugal relations). Deuteronomy 21:15-17.
Most people today view polygamy as immoral while the Bible nowhere explicitly condemns it. The first instance of polygamy / bigamy in the Bible was Lamech in Genesis 4:19: "Lamech married two women."
A man would take multiple wives and serve as the provider and protector of all of them. While definitely not ideal, living in a polygamist household was far better than the alternatives: prostitution, slavery, starvation, etc. In addition to the protection / provision factor, polygamy enabled a much faster expansion of humanity, fulfilling God's command to "be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth" (Genesis 9:7). Men are capable of impregnating multiple women in the same time period, causing humanity to grow much faster than if each man was only able to produce one child each year.
