4 Reasons Why Reading Your Significant Other's Texts Is a Bad Idea

Posted by James, 12 Nov

You just started a new relationship, and everything seems to be going well. Your significant other is smart, funny, kind and seems to be free of any emotional baggage. But, your new boo also has this habit of leaving his or her cell phone lying around - right where you can see it, pick it up and browse through the texts.

If you are even thinking about reading through your new boyfriend or girlfriend's texts, I have one word for you: don't. And here's why:

It Is a Trust Buster

In terms of ruining the level of trust you have established with your new sweetie, reading through his or her texts will do just that. Your new guy or gal obviously feels comfortable enough with you to leave the phone lying around, so don't destroy his or her trust by snooping, states Gurl. It's just not worth it.

Remember the Golden Rule

Another good reason to never read another person's texts is that you would absolutely hate it if someone else did that to you. Just think about how you would feel if you found your honey swiping away at your texts. You'd probably feel angry, confused betrayed and hurt - and with good reason. Keep this in mind for those days when your honey's phone is tempting you.

It’s Easy to Misinterpret

Reading another person's texts can lead you to assume the worst and jump to conclusions, explains Elite Daily. Think about your own texts. Do they ever explain the whole story? Or, are they just little snippets of conversations about a variety of topics? This is the same for your significant other's messages. For instance, if you find a text that says he or she will be glad to bring dinner to Ashley this Saturday, you might immediately assume that your sweetie is cheating on you. In reality, this person may be a sick co-worker or an old family friend.

It May Be TMI

Sometimes you'll just have that nagging little feeling that something isn't quite right in your relationship. As Marie Claire notes, when that little voice in your head is telling you that your boyfriend or girlfriend might be cheating or flirting with an old honey, it can be hard to resist picking up the phone and checking out the texts.

But, keep in mind that if you come across incriminating texts, you can't do anything about it without admitting that you were snooping. He or she will probably get mad at you, and the conversation will not go well. So, if you suspect that your new boo is texting an old flame, act like an adult and talk about the issue rather than spy and make accusations. This way, you will be able to have the high ground and have an open conversation. And, if your sweetie reacts poorly, you probably will have a clearer answer than if you read easily misinterpreted texts.
