Gaga's emotional performance at the Oscars makes her family realize she is a rape survivor

It was an emotional and moving performance that brought the audience to tears from the infamous Lady Gaga as she performed "Til It Happens to You" at the Oscars Academy Awards Sunday night. She co-wrote the song with Diane Warren for "The Hunting Ground," a CNN documentary about rape and assault within college campuses.

It was until after this powerful performance that some of her family members realized that she is also a survivor of the horrific crime of rape.

Gaga was raped at the age of 19 and this is something that she was "too ashamed" and "Too afraid" to talk about with her family members. In 2014, Gaga went public with her story. However not everyone in her family heard about it. Her grandmother and her aunt had no idea this happened to her until her Sunday performance. The song was introduced by Vice President Joe Biden and she was joined onstage by other survivors.

The day after her performance, her aunt Sheri and her grandmother Ronnie called her. '… with tears in her eyes I could hear them welling through the phone she said to me "My darling granddaughter, I've never been more proud of you than I am today,"' wrote Gaga in the caption of a family photo she posted on Instagram.

'…it took me a long time to even admit it to myself because I'm Catholic and I knew it was evil but I thought it was my fault. I thought it was my fault for ten years… Something I have kept a secret for so long that I was more ashamed of than anything-- became the thing the women in my life were the most proud of. And not just any women, the ones I look up to the most,' she further wrote.

The sad thing is, like Gaga, most rape survivors live through life blaming themselves for what some evil person did to them. And it is such performances by such influential people that make them realize, they are not alone and that its never their fault.
