Is black and white so hypnotic?

Posted by Ria, 10 Mar 09

In the United States, just 1% of white marriages and 5% of black marriages are interracial. The most common of interracial marriages is between Asian women and white men. So why are there more articles on black/white marriages as opposed to the more common Asian-white marriages? Even with these statistics in our hands, when a study is done on interracial anything, it somehow tends to veer towards black and white.

For instance, in analyzing the plight of mixed race adolescents, some study used data from the National Survey of Adolescent Health (Add Health), which surveys over 90,000 individuals who were in grades 7-12 in the 1994-95 school year. HOWEVER, "304 black-white mixed children" were interviewed. And the whole thing went on to be about black and white completely ignoring the children of Latino-Black, Asian-White and other interracial pairings. And when talking about mixed race individuals racial identity dilemma, we make reference to black-white.

Steve Jones - Professor of Genetics at University College London - argued last year that we will soon observe the complete obliteration of the races: “We are mixing into a global mass, and the future is brown.” Global mass? Brown? He just couldn’t avoid making it a black and white issue now could he? (Or is it I that can't help but assume that by saying brown, he was making reference to black and white?)

Your perfect partner could be online right now...

What are you looking for?

I must admit we interracial bloggers can’t be left out of this one. We kind of behave like any mixed race relationship other than black/white, don’t qualify as interracial. I mean, look at my blog posts. More than 75% of the ones on mixed-race relationships are centered on black and white relationships. And the ones that get the most responses are those on black and white issues.

The other day I stumbled across this on Other Brothers blog:

“… this will be pretty much about white and black people. I know other races date but for some reason minorities dating other minorities doesn’t have the same stigma. So we’ll go with what moves people.”

We focus so much on black and white relationships and issues in general and forget that when it comes to racial issues, other ethnicities have also played a role in making the world what it is today. (And here I am still doing the same thing ... blogging "black and white" again. No matter how I twist the topic, I still end up there).

Is black and white so hypnotic that we just can’t help but be drawn to black-white issues? If you agree with Other Brothers above, does this mean that we should ignore other interracial relationships and issues just because black and white 'moves' people?

I've heard that interracial black/white relationships are hypnotic and that may very well be the case for many. In fact, several white men have told me that they think its hypnotic. Many people of the same race feel that way too. For example: My grandmother was very very fair;in fact one could tell she was very much mixed and she would tell you in a heart beat that she LOVED very dark men. She used to say.. the blacker the berry the sweeter the juice. My grandfather was very very black and they loved one another dearly. She loved his darkness and he loved her whiteness. However, for me, the allure for interracial dating is simple. I love the way that I'm treated. Not having had a father that was very kind and affectionate and not having experienced good relationships with Black men, I suppose I have a skewed perception. But to me a lot of Black men are quite harsh in the way that they deal with their families, girlfriends and wives. However, other women may have experienced a different interaction. Perhaps its cultural white men as a whole seem to be taught to treat their women and families with much respect, love, and attention weithout seemingly worrying about being macho or hard. Those that are truly attracted to Black women are very very kind and attentive. Its like having gone to heaven. You just cant believe that youre being treated so well. Once I experienced a whiff of the aroma of wonderful treatment, I was hooked.

The emphasis on white/black relationships may stem from a belief that persons of a black/African background are the least desirable as mates. The pairing of an individual from a desirable race with a person from a less desirable race could lead to more time being spent trying to figure why these relationships occur. It makes perfect sense for people to ask the question, If a group is not desirable, why would anyone want to deal with them on any level especially on a romantic/intimate one?

Response @ M. Elliot: I will go out on a limb here and stand by M Elliot. I agree with his findings, I know what i know and the facts dont lie. Everyone on here seem to disagree and quick to call him names, but a lot of us dont really want to know the truth or our true history. Many of our ancestors have experienced pure evil and atrocities whether it is by the hands of their own ppl or others. M.Elliot, there are ppl out there that will always turn the other way in order not to acknowledge the truth. I have read and heard about the globalization of the Chinese on the continent of Africa and how the asian men are marrying and having families with these african women. The Chinese Gov't isnt taking ppl from Africa; they are setting up camp. The faces of Africans in Africa is slowly changing. Just a thought, I wonder what parts of Africa will look like say, half a century from now, it might not even take that long. PPl dont hate M. Elliot, do your own research and then you can agree to disagree. Oh and for those of you who want to start with the name calling-dont even think about it, it makes you look this small.....

I am 21 and a white female, my fiance is 21 and black male. Not only are we judged by the outside world, but the inside as well, which happens to be many in my family. Someone close to me said, "she is with him because she feels thats all she's worth". My reply, im with him because "HE KNOWS MY WORTH". What an ignarant thing to say, and is it just because he is African American, would she have said the same if he was Asian? My guess is no. It comes to show you that little minds see little facts, and to explain what I mean is; in America it is more common to hear about certain things pertaining to certain races. We have given such shoes to fill because that's all we choose to see. News, school, everyday America. It's what is the "norm". According to some, i'd be looked at as someone who didn't think to highly of themselves to be with an African American, where as he would be looked at as maybe he thinks he's better than them. Truthfully there are so many thoughts and opinions about that, but it's because "we" as Americans keep up with it, keep up with the racial opinions, feelings, sterotypes, ect. It's as if you were to see one handicap person in a crowd of people with no disability, i'm sure eyes first glance would be on them. Just as if we ( my interracial relationship) would be in a crowd of whites with whites blacks with blacks ect, we would catch eyes much faster, just because it's not what is normal to most of society. And we choose to keep it that way. It's a persona that people have kept with them for ages. Ignorant minds choose to stay in one place instead of stepping out into a world of new to see history in the making. We have come so far, yet should be so much further. I am expecting my first child, and with no doubt in my mind know that things will be said, and looks will be made...but that's where I choose to be the one in control and allow America to move forward because it's going to happen regaurdless of what one chooses to say. People spend a lifetime speaking to others about indivuality and being yourself, well then don't contridict yourself when someone chooses to do so and lives a life you don't like. How is it that our youth is so much more free? well because we stepped out of the "norm" and decided to make history when you. "our previous generation" chose to be so little minded. Maybe you should take a lesson every now and then by the youth instead of thinking you know it all. It's 2010 :)

Black and white relationships in the U.S are and always will be forbidden fruit. Whites and Blacks are supposed to be on opposite sides of the spectrum. So how in goobers name can they identify with and love each other? ITS IMPOSSIBLE - they say. And that's why people stare, insult, and eventually write about these types of relationships. They very idea of Black/white dating evokes fiery passions in this country - be they positive or negative. On the other side of things, these "Other" types of interracial relationships (Asian/white, Latino/white, Latino/Asian etc) are deemed boring because the races are closer to each other in appearance and culture. In addition, in these types of IR where one party is white, its also no big deal because White people also did not oppress these other races/cultures as much as they did the black race. Black people are also the only race where if one individual does something, they represent the WHOLE race. if they date a white man/woman, they are selling out on and shaming the the WHOLE race. Then, AL Sharpton, the NAACP and good ol' Rev. Jesse have to get involved... Its ridiculous..I wish America would get over this whole thing. Everywhere else in the world, blacks date whites, Asians etc and the world keeps a movin'. Here, its like you commit murder every time you do it and everyone has something to say about it. Crazy insane nonsense.

I was fascinated by the discourse of M.Elliot, painstaking and erudite as it was, and believe there is a nub of truth in some of what he was saying. However, he then went on to obscure it by referring to China's response to the so-called United Nations as though that nation's government had transformed itself from ruthless, intrusive dictatorship to paragon of democracy in an instant. Is he seriously suggesting that they somehow managed to poll all 1.25 billion of the population on the pressing matter of racial/cultural stereotypes as they relate to Asian women, rather than on, say, how the hell they're going to feed everyone in the years to come? In any event, a country/organisation/government will always respond with some mud-slinging of its own when it feels under attack and will rarely attempt to address the issues raised. However I, like M. Elliot, digress. My main point is: what has all of that got to do with the subject of this blog? I believe BrowngirlLDN and Siolav got pretty close to the answer when they suggested that it's the visual contrast that makes people more aware of it. It is easy to see and sharp contrast is always more compelling and emotive ... that's why it is so effective in visual art. I'm just so surprised that it has taken 57 pages to provide such a simple and straightforward answer. Thank you for your clarity and sanity, ladies! PS: M. Elliot - clever answer but bad exam technique. Answer the question!

I realize that this discussion is old and outdated from months ago. For-Mr.Elliot- You brought out a lot of valid points in your post. Unfortunately we live in a world that doesn't exactly like to hear the "negative" sides of a particular argument. Unlike some of the comments on this blog, I do not view your comments as racist in any way.I took the time to read every part of your posts and drew an overral conclusion. In fact, let me share a small discussion I had with 2 of my Asian friends in college. One of which I still keep in touch with and has openly admitted that Asian women either marrying/courting white men carries a symbol of "status." How I can agree that times are changing and evolving, this was ONCE true. Black and White are hypnotic simply because everyone keeps making it an issue in THESE United States. Shotgun007

Haha, my thoughts exactly bighoss. While I can appreciate a beautiful man of any color, I am a black American woman who is particuarly attracted to white men. Nothing more, nothing less. It's really interesting. I have been in a steady relationship for 6 years now, and I can honestly say we don't even realize our "differences". We are with each other because we are attracted to one another, we get along with each other, we want to be with each other, and we love each other. period. I honestly believe the people who make such a big deal about interracial relationship - those who like to psychoanalyze, pick a probe them - are those who are not in one. I have been living in Europe for the past 4 years now, and am only "aware" of my boyfriend and my skin color when I come back home to the States. And it's times like these when I am glad that I made the move.

There does seem to be more of a hysteric element to Black/White interracial relationships in the United States. And there is a saying "where it's hysteric, it's historic". No other "racial" group has been as systematically terrorized in the US as those with African roots, with the obvious exception of those who were here when Europeans first arrived. It makes sense. How can you enslave a person who is married to your son or daughter? And that same principle continued through our history through Civil Rights to today. I believe some of it has to do with trying to justify the past in some way, but it definitely is a hot issue (witness this blog). It also makes sense because Blacks have historically (and may still be) the second largest ethnic group in the US (though Latinos are second by a couple of percentage points, that number includes Latinos of any race). As the Latino population of the US increase (projected to be about 30% in 40 years), so will the awareness of "mixed" couplings which include Latinos. Or so it would seem. Asians are a mere 4% of the population, so it is natural that less attention would be paid there. Even though around 45% of Asians women report co-habitating with a White mate, that is still a small percentage of the total population. I'm guessing that Black/White cohabitation comes in at a much higher figure overall but I couldn't find the stats readily and frankly stopped caring. From my own observations on history I will say that the behavior of (largely male) warriors is atrocious in almost all regards. I mean the goal has always been to kill as many of your foe as possible and the treatment of non-combatants, i.e., women has almost always included exploitation at best and brutal rape and mutilation at the worst. And the aftermath always includes children conceived by women at the hands of the enemy. From my own experience I can say that most White men do not think of Asian women as sexual play things. Most White men don't think of Asian women hardly at all. They think mainly of White women and that's why the percentage of non-interracial marriages continues to be so high. I can't remember ever having a man of any race confide to me that he thought of Asian women in an exploitive way (although I have heard sexist and sexy remarks about women of all races at one time and another). I know it happens but I have to believe that if most White men think that way, I would have heard it spouted publicly a lot more often. And if the majority of "happy-ending" masseuses were Lithuanian, Aborigine, Irish or Martian, there would still be a steady flow of achy men patronizing their parlors.

I definitely agree with you kaheesha. It's only in America that we have these kind of problems. I think it all goes back to history. The history of blacks and whites in this country has been bitter, even after slavery things never changed, sadly even to this day and age where many non-white people has advanced within society and have gained political power, we still get ignorant feelings to interracial relationships to blacks and whites. It's so funny how this whole post is just one big comic show. In this day and age black/white relationships should be looked at the same way as any other interracial relationship;people just shouldn't have to worry or think anything of it. It's only in America you find these problems. I think people in this country should see the world more and they will realize that other cultures don't behave, act or think like them. Black/white relationships is Europe is as natural as waking up everyday, there are no stares. Where I grew up in the West Indies everyone is mixed and it's perfectly fine. This is just an obstacle that this country should get over, because the rest of the world don't think this way about interracial relationships.

Hello everyone, I know,I don't think that God has put different nationalities here on this earth for a reason. I hjave no problem with mix races. My favorite kind of mixture is (Black woman and White man). This is what I like to see,and it's something I like doing. I think caucasion men are afraid to approach a black woman because of rejection.I guarantee ypou I can get a lot of white men for bopy friends if I persued it. I think asian women are their second choice. They won't admit it. I wonder why? Oh well, I'm not one to allow the society to run my life. I allow God's word to run my life. I know that interracial dating is not a sin,so I'm going to do it.Simply because aI want to. There's a lot of divorcees out there and it's not because they married someone out of their race.

This is a deep topic and I believe that all have valid points. We (as a society) must listen to all views and take them seriously before any progress can be made. I have dated white for quite some time (25 yrs) and recently i have been blessed to meet a man who is multiracial and I must admit, he and I do not receive the "evil eye" as when I dated white. (sighs) Maybe one day, just one day people will stop questioning the wrapping that true love comes in and just appreciate the gift inside.

Wow! There is so many passionate and some very valid and great comments from various individuals. I read the whole thing, every posting... I am an Aussie, living in Australia and I can say with complete honesty that I don't believe there is that much of a drama with mixed relationships here. I have never heard another Aussie use the term "Inter racial couple/relationship". I am the youngest child of 4, until 10 years ago my parents were still married. Now my Dad has a girl friend that is my age and another nationality and after reading everyone's Ooh, interracial comments maybe I should add that she is East African. If my Grandmother was alive now she would be about 105, she would have had a problem... SHe was a another generation entirely and even though she would have struggled at first, as I know the age gap would have been more of a problem to her than she is another nationality. When it come's down to it, my Dad is happy and that is what is important. I am too easily side tracked... Aussie's are generally not caught up in Ooooh, are they black/white/asian as in who the individual is... I have dated guys with differant skin tones than my own fair skin, some have been tanned, some are of other nationality's and I have never had a drama with strangers. My brother told my Mum about 9 years ago that he had travelled half way around the world to fall in love and that she was 'black'. My Mum told him that she was happy for him and wanted to know all the usual things, "name, age, wanted picture's and when would she meet her". My brother has 2 kids with her now, and my niece and nephew are absolutely beautiful. They call themselve's biracial, my niece is 7 and will tell people that "I am not black, or white I am half and half." She, and her brother are not about the colour of their skin, they know there is a difference and it's only that they don't need to use fake tan like me if I fancy having some pigment to my skin tone. If anyone wonders, yes there is mixed relationships here and people do not comment or stare or make it their business. Whether someone is asian, white, black, biracial or anything that you want to throw into the mix it's not an issue.... At the end of the day only the individual's are in the actual relationship, so what business is it of anyone else's. Even if that relationship is noted as a statistic somewhere...

Hey, I see that this conversation/debate started by M. Elliot is still going on. Quite a topic! I think that the differences between black and white is is visually the extreme opposite (excluding other races whose pigment is more of mixtures)and therefor more noticeable. Different ways of thinking are cultural depending upon where you are born. People with different genetic makeup, but born raised and educated in the same culture tend to think and live similarly. People have been mixing for thousands of years. It is nothing new. Only changes in history have changed our viewpoint on race relations. As it has been written, we are all related down the line of ancestry. As for the world becoming beige eventually- rubbish. Personal experience has shown me that Caucasian genes can be stronger than Negroid genes. We will continue to choose a mate based on prefference. If a Black person of mixed race chooses an Asian, the child may look more Asian and if their offspring chooses another Asian the children may look completely Asian. If my son chooses A Caucasian mate, their offspring will look more Caucasian. So it all comes down to genes and chromosomes. As for me, I appreciate men of all persuasions, but as for personal choice I am attracted more to Caucasian men. I have often questioned why and all answers come down to; I happen to like a particular look that Caucasians have. It has nothiong to do with self hatred. We should all own up to what we are attracted to and hope that a loving relationship comes out of it.

I think the black/white thing is hypnotic because it's right there in your face. The *extremes* of colour. The ultimate contrast. I don't know how mixed race relationships are dealt with within other racial cultures so I can only call upon my own personal experiences. I know if a white guy at work comes in and says "yea, I'm really into Japanese girls" then loads of guys will pipe up and join him in their mutual appreciation for Japanese women. If that same guy were to say "I'm really into black women" then everyone, the world and his wife wants to dissect his desire and put their two pennies into the mixture too. I think of all the kinds of IR you get, black/white is the one *everyone* seems to have an opinion. Ooh and p.s. M.Elliot, you're a dick.

Sheriann76, you SHOULD be proud of your response. I understand that you are saying you would not have been able to do the things you speak of if you were alive during the time that those things were blatantly taking place. You at least attempted to answer the question that summed up the article.

sheriann76 ; upon further investagation , you being 24 at the present time and stating that 50 years ago you were not able to drink at a fountain . These words are Deceitful . To start in life being Deceitful may be the Canadian way . In the U.S.A. , We call this a Liar and once a Liar always a Liar . You made your choice in a Public Forum , Be Proud .

chap07 ; you are correct in anger / my computer would not show what I had printed , so I keep try ing in anger toward a machine that would not co-operate and finally they all came up at once - Religious History Preaching is another of my Dislikes . It Happened over two thousand years ago , it Predicts the End of the World as We know it [ We are not ready to die just yet ] . The World Ends for many people everyday . You can go tell it to the Mountain Nobody knows the Sorrows We have seen , save ourselfs . sheriann76 ; You are so correct in your time range . I was younger then , lived in the country up North and can remember the shotgun houses for the Black farmers families in the onion fields . This was around Chittenango , New York . [ circa 1955 ] I remember fishing Onieda Lake all night Saturday to catch a couple Large Catfish , then Our family would drive by to sell them inorder to collect tithes for the Catholic collection plates on Sunday mornings . The odor of onions very pungent in the air , The Catholic Priest speaking Latin in Mass . First , I would be exhausted from lack of sleep and an Abusive father - who was a slave driver toward me all night long by keeping me awake / do this - do that slapping me up side the head repeatedly [ Me , only an elementary student ] . Then one hour of Silence listening to words that I did not understand while being told to quit fussing - sit still , don't get your suit dirty . I was just a child , Exspected to act as an Adult [ with lack of sleep ] . Thank you as now I remember why I Dislike Religious Services . Alas I was not at an age to realize how badly others were being treated daily , as all I saw were Happy Families fixing to Enjoy a Fresh Catfish Lunch . My age at that time was the reason that I did not see the injustices happening to Our Neighbors in the fields . I feel sorrow now for the injustices of yesterdays world , yet at the time it Happened did not see it Happening . At the age of 18 was pronounced Dead at the scene of a Massive auto accident and in a Coma 21 days , severly disabled and always had a rough time seeking while employment in order to eat in my younger years as to my Disabilities . I never had time to worry about the Hardships of others as I went to sleep hungry many nights / sometimes sleeping under bridges on cold concrete . Due to the Abusive nature of my own father , we never established a tight family unit . Having grown to Love all peoples that I have meet in my journeys through Life . I was Blind to the problems of a Large part of Our Society .

I'm going to take a chance here and respond to the question directly. The shock value in black/white relationships (in my view) comes from history. Less/a little more than 50 years ago i could not drink from certain fountains let alone share my bed with a white man. As for Asian women/white men relationships, that's a topic i'm not going to get involved in. I hope the attention these relations are getting will serve as a reminder, how far we have come and where we're heading as a human race. Not pigments.

chap07 ; I stutter a lot and this is a Dating site where I met my wife . Not a Religious Blog where I feel I have to Listen to where I shall go upon my demise . I was Baptized in 1948 thereby saving me from sin , and have seen the Greed in Our Local church with my own eyes , Religion is the Opiate of the masses I have read . Jesus Christ in his own time , was crucified because he was a Subverter to the Word of Law of the Power in his time . His duty as given by God is to get you through the gates of Heaven when your soul leaves your body of Flesh and Bone . Meanwhile there are many Responsibilities in Life one must endure . Genesis chapter 2 verse 25 ; And they were both naked , the man and his wife and were not ashamed . You have forgotten John 3/16 . Being an American Citizen , freedom of Religion is My Choice and I choose to believe that all Books written were inspired by God . Our lawn still needs cutting / Christian - is that not what God preaches , to help others in need .

Too many different questions - Toss a coin / I picked the one that I wanted to answer . I married a Ladie , I found that on this site she is Brown not Black and I am Flesh not White , She refers to herself as Other and only God knows the secrets of my Heritage . With any luck at all will never see the rest of the World / other than on the Media . Plenty Happy in Texas , seen 48 States and Ontario , Canada in my Lifetime . All expenses paid . Actually , I counted 9 question marks at the top of the page .

biggee : I am only able to speak of that which , I Believe are Our opinions on that which We see unfolding in life in Our own " Neck of the Woods . " The question was ; So why are there more articles on Black/White marriages as opposed to the more common Asian/White marriages . The answer would be ; Because that is all that writers in the Media choose to write about , in their articles . There are many Mixed Relationships here in East Texas - Alas most found their mates in places other than this site.

This thread contains some interesting posts, but as a whole, I don't think it answers the initial question of "Is Black and White so hypnotic that we can't help but be drawn to Black and White issues"? Maybe the question itself leaves so much room for interpretation that a wide variety of responses should have been anticipated. It could be that as the responses were added, read, then responded to, the focus changed with each reader's perception of the post they'd just read, versus their understanding of the original question. Maybe the answer is a mystery that's just far beyond the finite understanding of Man (just kidding here). Whatever the reason, most of the posts here don't attempt to answer the initial question; most of them (even one of mine) attempt to answer some aspect of another person's post that only relates to the question in a periphery, more personal way. I only see where a few of us have addressed the question head-on. Yes, it's a "Black and White" issue, but the question is more specific than that. Just talking about "Black and White" in our own realms of experience doesn't quite do the question justice. I thought we'd get more answers on a "global" level, versus a personal one. I do note that an answer on a "global" level stands to not address the more intricate experiences that we as individuals have, but it would be appropriate for the question, since the question itself is one that begs a "global" answer.

The question is: So why are there more articles on black/white marriages as opposed to the more common Asian-white marriages? The answer, IMO, is: Because I do not feel that the media differeniate these two groups as much as it does the black/white combo. To the mass media, I feel that they see the Asian as being more of an "exotic white" than another race all together. It's like that with the hispanic/white combo as well. They didn't consider Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez as an interracial couple. The black/white couple is just more noticeable, and really despite how far it all has seem to come, still taboo by many standards. Asian/white coupling is just more acceptable. I notice it when I see it, not that I'm bothered by it at all, but I just like to watch other people's reaction to different situations...I'm an observer. And when I observe people observing people, no one is the wiser when it comes to asian/caucasian couples. Now, black/white definitely...however, it's the black girl/white guy couples that draw the most stares. Black guy/white girl is just about played out where I live. It's rampant. You almost see more bm/ww than bm/bw, lol; and I've only seen ONE asian guy/black girl couple in all my years of living here. They were a young couple...high school. They were walking around the cineplex holding holds. It was sweet, but I did catch myself staring a bit. It was like a mythical animal that you had heard about only in books--like a unicorn. They were my Uni-couple...lol.
