Is interracial marriage a crime? Mississippians vote "Yes"!

Posted by James, 13 Apr

interracial marriage illegalThe recent survey released by the Public Policy Polling made my stomach churn. See... with the rise in interracial marriage, I had come to believe that people’s views on interracial marriage are changing… that the people of the U.S. are becoming more accepting of interracial marriage… until I read the results of this poll.

When Republican primary voters in Mississippi were asked whether interracial marriage should be legal or illegal, a massive 46% of the respondents went with “illegal”; with 14% “unsure” and 40% going with “legal”. These results are depressing. I mean…what the $*&% is happening down there?

Let me analyze these poll results:

To me, the 14% unsure voters are not in any way different from the 46%. So if I were the one publishing these results, I’d have said '60% of the respondents believe marriage between people of different races is a felony'. I am still bamboozled at these results. SERIOUSLY? Is miscegenation still that big an issue? And what even provoked the inclusion of the interracial marriage question in PPP?

I know interracial relations might rub a few people the wrong way and I have learned to live with that. But 60%!!!!! As in 60% of the Republican voters believe the existence of President Obama should have been prevented? Are some states locked in their own time zone that spans in decades (backwards) as opposed to hours? Clearly, when it comes to the issue of race, we are not progressing at the rate at which most of us would like to believe we are.

Oh! And a poll respondent sent an email to PPP explaining why she feels interracial marriage should be illegal: “I believe God made us a different color for a reason and should be honored by not marrying outside of the race that God picked for me...”

Question is: Are these the views of most Republicans in general? Well, the assistant director PPP said they also asked Democrat voters the interracial marriage question and the results will be released at a later date.

Moses married a Cushite. Interracial dating in the Bible. I honestly believe that the root is ignorance that manifests into racism. It may seem logical to put similar things (i.e. race) together. We as humans have been trained that way and that cannot be denied. As children, we've been told to put all the yellow balls in this basket and the blue stars in this one, etc. A simple activity designed for one outcome manifests into something grotesque and just plain wrong. The people of Mississippi who voted have embarrassed not only their state, but America. We are a laughingstock - maybe even an enigma - to the rest of the world because we are the most powerful nation in the world, currently at war and yet concerned about the dating rituals of her citizens.

For those that believe, the Bible says that the only ' interracial ' Marriage is between a believer and a non-believer. I'm guessing that at least some of the Mississipians that are against interracial Marriage would call themselves Christians. And here I thought that we were all a part of the HUMAN race.

This topic definitely caught my attention, mainly, because I'm from Mississippi. I am 33 years old and don't recall voting on this at all. This must have been voted on in the 1950s and 60s. Interracial dating is NOT illegal in Mississippi and is actually prevalent. In my opinion, love is love regardless of race or color. As comedian, Damon Williams says, "Ladies, Sistahs, stop hating when you see a black man with a white woman...first of all, that ain't none of your business. It's two grown people, let them be together....but more importantly, alot of brothers don't even know how to treat a woman right! Now, I'm not hating on my brothers but let the white girl find out! She'll see what y'all have been going through. Don't even worry about it. Wait about 11 months and you'll see her in the hood with a little beige baby in the stroller 'Has anyone seen Donte'? He has my car, my credit cards. Have you seen......?" LOL! I'm joking. Black men are amazing!

I am from upstate New York but I live in south Georgia and have since I was 11. I do not know if my upbringing or where I am from effects my point of view on things or not. I do not see why so many people have a problem with it. I mean yeah if one race bled red and the pther bled blue then I could see where there might be an issue but we all bleed red so what is the big deal. The sad thing is there are so many people that find it offensive that many people grow up thinking it is wrong. My ex and the father of my kids is like that, He at one point said if our daughter ever came home and said she was dating a black man he would beat the crap out of the guy, I asked him what the big deal is and he changed his tune whaen he could not answer the question. It was all in how he was raised. i had to show him that there is not a big deal about it.

It is a sad commentary on politics and media that this question found its way onto a public policy poll. These people influence public opinion by prodding respondents to believe poll questions are important and widespread issues, when in fact the questions reflect the biases of the pollster. On the bright side, the result does represent a gradual change in people's thinking. I imagine as little as 60 years ago the number would have been closer to 100%. Hopefully the 40% who responded "no" are younger respondents and the negative irrational attitude reflected by the poll results will disappear with the turning of the generation.

I guess I would have been a criminal in missippi; I was married to a black woman and want to be again. I have seen some people from mississippi on this site, Im sure I have; so not everyone thinks that way. Im happy we are makking progress. When I ask woman of color to date on other sites they always ask if I have ever dated out of my race. I like to assure them I am willing to hold their hand in public, or kiss them in public; and my family will suport me in any choice I make. I am so happy my family does not mind who I date. Its so much easier when I can introduce a woman to my mother and she will get into a conversation; it alows me to help her with the yard while they talk.

Why are we concerned with others think about our choices in partners anyway? I think people are too concerned with how they appear to others instead of just living life and being happy with their choices.

I think it is a sad thing, howver do think it is becoming less an issue in most parts of the country. Mississippi has always had a problem with segregation, let alone interracial marriages or relationships ever since I can remember. And that is many years. People need to start looking past the skin color of all human beings, look on the inside to see what the other person really is. America is still very racist all over the country, but the southern part of our country seems to be more or less stuck in the older days. I have lived down south and in the northern part of out country, and it reared it's head more often down south than it does here. There are good people and bad amongst all colors, but I think everyone wants to be accepted by all, however, there is still an invisible wall that many are afraid to let down. I have had many friends both black, and white, most of which do not know my other side, and some do, that I would help in any way I could, not just white. And have had both do the same for me.

I'm not surprise at all with how people in Mississippi think about interracial dating. I don't think it's just people who live in the south that feel that way. America is still a very very racist country especially towards Black & White relationships, be it romantic or not.

While it is distressing that there are still views such as this in this day and age, we must recognize the foundation of this antiquated mentality. Simply put...it is fear. Fear of change, fear of progress, and fear of self examination of personal predjudices. For some it is easier to not address their internal shortcomings and go with the lessons learned from familiar and taught viewpoints of an earlier time. A wise person would look within and examine thier values and seriously question their morality. A wise person would look at the social and economic standing of the State of Mississippi and see that a change is mandatory in all aspects of life there..........A wise person would get the hell out of Mississippi!!!! While the rest of our society has moved forward, there is an element that fears peace, love and understanding of others who see the world in a different way. As the poll shows..there are people in that beautiful state who understand, however, the staggering percentage who oppose or are undecided on this issue is quite troubling to the times we live in. And while I will pray that the Lord blesses them with understanding...I will be going nowhere near Mississippi anytime soon. We, as people who practice enlightened thinking can only set an example that there is nothing to fear in inter-racial marriage. We must show the true colors of love as it crosses the barriers of race and gender. Love is Love..pure and simple. Where one finds love, wherever it is, should be celebrated for the beautiful gift it is, as well as the example it gives to those who truly cherish the ideal of love.

The reason people answered this way is the White race is outnumbered by all the others. There are a billion Blacks. 2 billion Asians, 2 billion Indians and 2 billion Arabs and 500 million Whites. The darker races could make the white race extinct. But there would still be Blacks, Arabs and Asians. The Whites would be gone. The Lions don't care about the pack even though they are all Lions. The Cheetahs don't care about other Cheetahs. Panthers don't care Tigers. The White race has improved all the other races. For one thing when you look at a light skin Black do you assume they are just a different hue and not mixed with Whites? If you read about the Protocols Of Zion you'll learn why these things happen. You can go into any cafeteria or sporting event at schools. The Blacks will sit with the Blacks and the Whites with the Whites. The Black women probably give the best BJ and might be hotter at sex. The hottest White women have Black hair and they are Latin. The Latins have Black blood. The Black women have that animalistic sexuality. In the old days they used to Black woman to warm the bed and because they had total control over them they had sex with them. I bet the Black women didn't mind.

Not 1700s. These ppl are stuck in earlier times of the good and the bad. Which lead to very ltl mental progression. Life is a bitch then you die!
