Rachel Lindsay Breaks History as the First Black Bachelorette

Posted by Ria, 15 Feb

It's finally happening... 'The Bachelor' franchise has named Rachel Lindsay to be the next star of 'The Bachelorette'. And this is is the first time they are having a black woman to be the star of the show.

'The Bachelorette' is now living up to its promise of bringing diversity on the show. Lindsay, 31, who is an attorney from Dallas will be the first black woman to star in the new season of the show set to premiere May 22.

This great announcement from the network came on Monday night after fire from critics for lack of diversity on the previous seasons. Last summer, ABC president Channing Dungey responded to these allegations saying saying she would "very much like to see some changes there." Dungey is the first black woman to head ABC.

Your perfect partner could be online right now...

What are you looking for?

At the time she added:

"I think one of the biggest changes that we need to do is we need to increase the pool of diverse candidates in the beginning, because part of what ends up happening as we go along is there just aren't as many candidates to ultimately end up in the role of the next bachelor or bachelorette. So that is something we really want to put some effort and energy towards."

Seeing as they normally choose from candidates who don't win previous seasons, (spoiler alert coming!) Lindsay is on the current season of 'The Bachelor'.

Nick Viall, the suitor of the current season of 'The Bachelor' tweeted his congratulatory message to Lindsay:

Looking forward to season 13 of 'The Bachelorette'...

IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!! I've watched a couple of shows in past but stopped watching because it was only geared for the white culture. Sure there were a few black women and men thrown in for COLOR , but it was so obvious they wouldn't make it to the finals..heck their family would never stand for it....especially on the Bachelor ...Really? Rachel ...I didn't watch the show but, but , there was already a plan of action in place for her to get as far as she did. A LOT of discussion and decisions are made OFF camera. I wish Rachel the best and hope she has a lot of fun . I'll be setting my DVR so I don't miss an episode. GO GO GIT IT GIT IT GIRL!!!! :-) LOL

I have never watched the Bachelor or the Bachelorette before and if I did watch the show it would because she is a local girl. I am also from Dallas, Texas and interracial dating is not a big deal here. I have family members that know her Father who is a Judge, and they say that she comes from a very nice family. I don't know why her being Black is a big deal because she is just looking for love and like so many women she just wants to find a good man and get married. She is a very intelligent woman so I am sure that this platform will only give her the opportunity to meet someone that she can truly connect with.

Good luck Rachel, I have never followed the show, but it is about time. The clips I caught of it have all been white girls on it.

There have actually been several beautiful black girls on the show in the past but obviously none have moved up to the last 2 or 3 standing. Glad to see this woman selected. She seems wonderful.

I just hope she's far more intelligent, has a desirable personality and doesn't come across as a complete bimbo like many of the other female contestants on such "shows".
