Man Hurls Racist Insults at Interracial Couple in Dartmouth

Posted by Ria, 21 Jul 16

"Let's go over this again: you don't marry outside of your own race. It's ugly. It's unnatural," yelled a man at Stephanie Johns and Chris Murdoch - an interracial couple. They were with their baby Maceo on Ochterloney Street, Dartmouth, N.S. on Sunday morning.

Much as Murdoch who is black has experienced racism before, this incident shocked him. "I had never experienced someone who seemed to have a very specific problem with mixing of races. Especially being from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. You know it's something that seems very common so I was a bit surprised that he had an issue with it," Murdoch said.

Apparently, the man was just hollering - not even looking in their direction. Murdoch's wife Johns said: "I don't think that anything that blatant has ever happened to us before. I felt sick."

The only explanation Murdoch had for the stranger's behavior was that he possibly had mental health issues. He however said that doesn't entirely excuse his racism. "Stephanie and I certainly are always aware that we might run into people who have issues with our relationship even in 2016, which is unfortunate," Murdoch said. "But now I think we're on more high alert than ever."

The couple is also getting ready to have the 'potential prejudice' conversation with their son once he becomes of age.

He's got himself a good, gorgeous woman. I hope they stay together and not let the bigots tear them apart.

I think they are a cute couple ! Handsome man and attractive woman. I've learned through dating interracially, that it is not my problem how others perceive or interpret my relationship with someone of another race. Its plain and simple none of their business who I choose to date or have sex with regardless of race or culture. We are given the human ability of choice. I have decided to exercise that choice ! Same race sex is comfortable. Interracial dating is exciting and an extraordinary exchange of culture and purpose !
