Linda & Lee - United States - South Africa
Married November 2011
He Ate Cactus on Their Date
“It’s better than going to bars,” Linda thought before joining our site. Today, she tells us she “wasn’t that confident” going in. But her doubts didn’t stop her from putting herself out there. In the online dating game, confidence is not required—only effort is.
The demands of Lee’s job made it difficult to hit the social scene, so this essentially forced him to explore the online option. “I didn’t have time to go out, since I was a driver and had a crazy schedule,” he says. Still, unlike Linda and many other singles we’ve spoken to, Lee brought a bright outlook to it. He says he was always “very optimistic” about finding love.
Lee’s positivity was put to the test in the three years he tried to find that special someone, without results. Ironically, it took less-confident Linda just a month of membership for Lee to find her on our site! “He reached out to me by sending me a message,” she relates. Reviewing Lee’s profile, Linda had the sense that he was “funny, honest” and a “loving, family oriented” fellow. She also appreciated that he didn’t drink or smoke. “I was curious,” she says.
As they exchanged correspondence online and graduated to phone communication, Lee liked Linda more and more. He discovered that she was “goofy fun” and “Christian, family oriented and caring.” On their first date, she was charmingly shy. “She was nervous and pretty,” he tells us. “Easy to talk to. I thought she was cool to hang out with.”
Linda attributes her anxiety to being attracted to Lee from the start. “He was damn handsome, and funny,” she remembers. Something else that stood out to her was the fact that Lee ate cactus on their date. Let’s assume he took the spines out first!
While it wasn’t the kind of first date that left both participants absolutely certain of a return engagement, both wanted to get together again. They just weren’t sure the other felt the same way.
Once Date No. 2 happened, nothing was going to derail this love train. It was “all aboard!” for Linda and Lee. As their relationship progressed, the couple learned more about each other. Linda admires that Lee is “honest and thinks about others before himself.” Lee feels similarly about Linda, observing that she is “honest and has good ethics.”
Nothing could convince them it wasn’t a good idea to spend the rest of their lives together, so this couple took the plunge and became man and wife. “We just found ourselves at the courthouse one morning,” Linda informs us. She adds that her bond with Lee has had a big impact on her life. “It’s made it easier, since I have someone I can confide in and love.”
We always ask couples what they would say to singles on our site. Linda and Lee gave the same advice. “Be honest, and be yourself. Have an open mind.”
And be careful when eating cacti on a date!
