A white couple Dana and Hugh Clarke are shocked when Dana gives birth to a baby with African-American features. How do you explain this one? Is this even genetically possible for a white couple to have a black child naturally as Barbara Delinsky, author of ‘Family Tree’ puts it?
So what would you do if this happened to you? Send your spouse packing or try to explore the genetic side of the story? And how do you even begin to convince your family and friends?

Even though both the male and female label themselves as white someone doesn’t know the whole truth about their genetics, It is impossible for two white people to have a black baby, but it is possible for a black to have a white baby (Albino). Both need to trace their family tree or someone is not telling the truth.

Blacks can have white babies. My best friend is married to a man who appears to be white. He is in fact, black. He has straight hair, white skin. His Mom is bi-racial, and his dad is a light skinned black. Both his parents look black, so go figure. All Bloggers..if you watch PRISON BREAK you will see that this is modern day and happans more often then people think. If you google Wentworth Miller aka Michael Schofield you will be amazed at his heritage.
To me this isn’t somthing that is schocking that someone wishes to write about, like they are trying to bring somthing schocking to the light. Not really, everyone bases stuff like this on the whole Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemmings ordeal. The offspring of Jeffersons looks like they have black in them, but Wentworth Miller, you would never no that he is of many, many cultural backgrounds.

If both parents are white and neither could be or would consider themselves black then it does not take Sherlock Holmes to figure this one out, DNA will clear this one up quick, fast and in a hurry.
Two mixed raced parents will produce mixed kids and no kid can be darker or lighter than either parent.
This reaching back generations stuff is just a cover that mother cheated very recently like 9 months ago. By the way a mixed raced person and any other race will still produced a mixed in appearence baby. I had to answer this because I,am tried of seeing this sort stuff being swept under the rug. You can bet the Mom knows who the REAL father is no one reaches any further into their family tree beyond their parents. I guess people really believe that those blonde haired blue eye kids are really Micheal Jacksons, skin lightners and processed hair and plastic surgery do not change his original dna either

Albino babies still have the phyiscal ( hair/nose/eyes ) of their race no one has ever had to ask and albino their race because it is obvious based on other factors other than skin color

Ok here is some perspective from someone who is a product of a mixed relationship. I can identify with the guy in cocokisses story as most people think Im hispanic and never guess black at all lol. My mom is white and my dad is lite skinned black guy. now my dad is lite skinned but his sister is a lot darker than him as well as his brother. I do believe the genes can reach back maybe a generation or so but I still would prefer to get a dna test as well. its something I havent experienced yet as I dont have kids but I do think it can happen and fala some say I look like him lol

Black people of mixed descent can have white babies (if there is white ancestry on both sides) It’s the same as blue eyes. 2 brown eyed parents can have blue eyed kids. But a white couple cannot have black kids just as a blue eyed couple cannot have brown eyed kids. Black is dominant as are brown eyes. If the genes for black skin are in you they will show and the white will be “masked” (at least partially) But if the “masked” genes are passed on on both sides and the black ones are not the kid will be white. But white couples cannot have genes for dark skin or they would show in the appearance, being dominant. So, 2 white parents = no black kids.

Wentworth’s dad was light complected mixed race , mother white, He would appear more white. My Hertiage is similar to Wentworth’s I have more white charatceristics than black remember no lighter than the lightest parent and no darker than the darkest. The child in question is much darker than either parent. I stand by my 1st comments. Yes I,am mixed and love diversity but its time to be real here.

there was a programme on recently in the uk…where twins were born to a white couple where one was born white and the other light with black features, it highlighted the different life experiences of each and the difficulties/isolation faced by the ‘black’child during child/adulthood,compared to that of his brother….i feel thats in all our genes an can happen at anytime..this is not the first time a story like this has been heard, there are black couples who give birth to babies with white skin/features, me and my sons father are brown and our baby came out as very pale skinned with curly lightbrown hair but that type of coluring is in our family, it happens. if this couple are able to look back into their history im sure they will find some other cultural connection….jamaicans say ‘out of many we are one’ so true..

She was from the south and her “White slave owner” ancestors had many “Black African” women “warm their beds.” It was determined that the “Black” gene decided to manifest itself when she got pregnant. It is possible for a couple that appear to be both white to have a baby that shows black genes. The reason would be because somewhere in one or both parents lives a the gene.
I am three different races. If I marry a man that is white then my child could look like he or she is only white or possibly bi-racial.
Having a child is like rolling dice. You do not know what number it will land on. Having a baby, you will not know what what it looks like until it is born.
My cousin’s daughter is proof as well. She has a white mom and a black dad. But she does not look like she has a black gene in her.
Then my grandfather’s brother was really fair skinned and black but had blue eyes. And my grandmother had straight hair and was bi-racial but could have passed for just being native american because she had straight hair.
The only way to truly tell what is going on is to take a DNA test if you are a couple with a “surprise” baby.
Maybe one parent was adopted and did not know he/she had black genes.

Some of these comments saddens me, especially on an interracial dating site. I have a cousin that is brown skin and her husband is dark skin. Their son is very light with gray eyes and blonde hair. If you dig back far enough there is some a lot of whites on my cousins father side and not many on her husband side. The point is when her husband has the baby along he gets a lot of ugly looks and it was even said my cousin had cheated on him.
This is 2007 people WAKE UP! Just because a gene is mostly dominate doesn’t mean it can’t be masked and reappear somewhere down the line. That’s what makes reproducing such a wonderful thing. You just never know what you will get.

I’m wondering though about the “African-American features” mentioned above. We all tend to be a mix of some sort or another in this country and African-American features can mean a wide variety of things. It is clear that some people don’t understand genetics. While I’d probably still want a DNA test just to be sure, we know TWO important things 1) Baby shows AA *FEATURES*… that doesn’t necessarily mean the child came out BLACK 2) Mom has no clue who her dad is, his race, or anything such details. That could make a huge genetic difference.
Either way, I’m pretty positive a DNA test was done before she wrote the book.
Look at other characteristics in ourselves that pop up differently depending on the generation- genetic illnesses that skip generations, other physical features such as breast size, height, etc. Just because our parents don’t have that trait, doesn’t mean that our mothers slept around.

I think this subject was cleared up many posts ago by an earlier comment relating to simple dominant/recessive genetics. I am a redhead, with fair skin and blue eyes. Both my parents and brothers are not red heads. However, there is the ginger gene present on both sides of my parents family. Both my parents had parents with red hair.
The reason I have re-appeared from a previous specific genetic ancestry is because the ginger gene is known and identified as recessive one.
Therefore it can hang around in the background of the gene pool and reappear at a latter date. Thus, if one parent has red hair, it is possible if not probable that they will have children without red hair, as in my parents case. Yet, even though both the parents do not have red hair, they can themselves create another ginger maybe two or three generations later.
However, the reason there are always less redheads than any other type is because the gene is often overlooked by ‘dominant’ genes. They are known and identified to be genes that control pigment (eg, people with blue eyes do not have a pigment) and are the darker coloured genes. There is a gene for example for brown and green eyes, and the eye colour is controlled by pigmentation. However, people with blue eyes do not inherit blue eyes, they merely did not inherit any other colour. Blue is the default setting so to speak.
The big difference here is that the darker pigmentation genes are not recessive. The are often picked first time in any conception by a parent that has themselves darker genes as they are the dominant genes. But if they are not inherited by the child, and therefore the child does not physically show darker pigmentations, as they are not recessive genes they do not carry through within that child. Therefore it is impossible for that child to go on and pass on the darker visible pigmentation genes to their children, as they do not behave in a recessive manner.
Basically, two people with brown or green or any pigment colour eyes can still have children with blue eyes. But two people with blue eyes cant have children with brown or green eyes.

Ever hear of Mendel’s table regarding genetics? Look it up. Probably if any of you had paid attention in science class this debate would never have occurred. Remember when you were in school and said, “Why do we have to know this crap?” Now you have your answer: so that you don’t later in life post uneducated comments unfairly and unjustly judging people. According to Mendel’s table pretty much anything is possible because of the presence of dominant and recessive genes. Also, to Red One: my son’s dad and I both have blue eyes, and my son has green, so you’re last comment can’t be true, and no, I didn’t cheat. Again, refer to Mendel - it depends on the combination of dominant and recessive genes, which one would have have no way of knowing without genetic testing, and how those combinations are formed and reformed as generations progress.

It is absolutely possible for two “white” parents to produce a black child. Back in the day quite a few light-skinned blacks passed for white so sometimes you can’t even trust your family tree. Racial purity is a myth anyway; when you think about it we are all multi-racial.

Two 100% black parents can have Albino kids, I saw that all the time in the Dominican Republic. But I’ve never heard of White people having Black children, that’s really strange. Since Black genes are dominant and White genes are recessive, one can see how it is possible that we all came from the same people through gene mutation and other factors such as the environment, foods, etc.

My husband is from white parents, but their must have been some dark in past generations coz him and his brother and sisters are all very dark (like turkish looking dark) he is the darkest. I am Black and we have a son he turned out white, (not albino) he was very white with blonde hair as a baby , now he is 12yrs and he has darker hair but is still very white with thin lips, and very defined nose and chin, he looks aristocratic, people never believe him when he says his mom is black.
So it can happen both ways. Genetics is Genetics, there are people in the world that start out white and get darker over the years and visa versa, life is funny, be openminded.

My husband’s mother was a 100% Ho Chunk (Native American) and father White (not sure of his exact origins). I a mutt mother Black (dark skinned) and my father mixed very fair skinned but kinky hair. Our son who has been DNA tested to meet a 25% tribal enrollment requirement. Has the skin tone of the average white person, has blonde straight hair with lovely hazel eyes. So there’s not much that shocks me any more.

Did this couple go to a fertility clinic? If so, the sperm from another male may have been unintentionally or negligently mixed with this couple’s efforts at fertility. A documented case occurred in the Netherlands when a worker at a fertility clinic used the same syringe from a previous couple on another couple–i.e., he mixed the sperm from both men. The result was the first couple had twin boys–one white and one mixed/black. The father of the mixed/black child was black. DNA tests confirmed the mixup and the true father of the mixed/black child was eventually found and notified about the son he didn’t know he had. I have a question on a related subject. Yes it is suspicious, if the child looks very different,though I think the benefit of the doubt should be given and dna testing be done to find out more information about the genes of the parents. Think about this ! you have 2 parents, 4 grand-parents, 8 great grand parentes, 16 great great grand parents, 32 great x3 grand parents, you get my point.
Four generations prior to this baby you have a total of 32 people, is it possible that one of them may have been BLACK or had some African ancestry in them?
If some of these people lived in the south it’s very possible that someone my have been of African ancestry.
According to Gregor Mendel ( the father of genetic study ), he stated that dark genes are dominate and light genes were recessive.
He stated that you could get the lighter from the darker but never the darker from the lighter.
If he is correct, then two white people could never produce nothing but another white child because recessive genes can’t produce dominate genes.
Whites who have black blood in them, regardless of how many generations back, yes their is a possibility for this black gene to show up generations down the line.
They call these genes ” sleeper genes because they can remain dormant for generations and one day, BAM, “guess who’s coming to dinner”! LOL
So it’s not fair to automatically assume that a woman has been unfaithful to her mate.
Many mulatoes after slavery was abolishes went on to pass for white, many moved up north and married amongst themselves and whites.
Some may have had children that looked like pure white children, blonde hair, blue eyes and white skin but in order to protect the family secrete, they were never told about their African ancestry.
I live in Nurnberg, Germany and I’ve visited the homes of more than a few of what I thought were “White Germans”.
I’d look at family photos hanging on the walls and they would indentify them as great grand parents or uncles or aunts and these people would have features that were unquestionably negroid.
Race mixing was wide spread in Europe centries before Europeans set sailfor the west, so it’s not hard to believe that many who came to America were of mixed acestry.

Genetics are a wonderful thing. To the people who think she cheated I would of probably thought the same thing until I had my son. I m white and my fathers dad is black from nigeria and when my son was born, he was white with no hair and blue eyes. Eventually his eyes got really brown and he grew hair which was brown bugt his skin remained white. DNA tests were done and the test was positive, he was his father. I knew it anyway cos I knew I never cheated on him. I still get looks an comments from people because they cant understand it but I dont care because I no the truth. So all the people who think she cheated, dont judge her unless you know the truth yourself, who are you people to say anything about there situation until your in the same situation yourself.

Race does not really exist in nature. It was invented by people with bad intentions. High fertility rates among so called “mixed race” couples pretty much disprove it. Try mixing a horse with a donkey and you’ll get a true lesson in “genetics”; we don’t create “mules” (essentially sterile) but people. Within me is the material to create Mohammid Ali or Albert Einstein.
I’m a snapshot of a superimposed image of my mom and dad and so are you. The way it works is that each of us contains literaly millions of snapshops of our ancestors. All the material is there but we can’t use it in our lives. It only gets used once in conception, usually a mixture of what the last snapshot was, but not always in rare cases. Sometimes, for reasons scientists DON’T KNOW, the older material is accessed.
But for now its doesn;t matter. Let’s enjoy our lives and be human.

Get we get over the business of differentiating and get to relating to commonalities please. That would include using the outmoded, and really offensive, term, “Negroid features” (Does that mean like Iman or like Brock Peters?). We are much more the same than we are different. A Palomino horse is like a Pinto is like a Roan.
I would also hate to be in a relationship with a woman whose faithfulness I doubted enough to doubt the paternity of our child, black, white or purple. In fact I like purple.

Well, i am reading this stupid blog and when i see Michael Jackson’s kids i want to say, won’t someone please do a DNA test on them? Those kids look nothing like michael, not even when he was a child. And although Michael lightend his skin color, for what, i have no idea, sold his soul to the devil, he would not produce caucasian children. Look at all of his brothers and sisters, not one of them is light-skinned. And that’s just my view.

Bottom line get a dna test second a person who has no picture on here can claim anything I look at the no pictured person ! extra-ordinary claims require extra-ordinary proof , bottom line the lady cheated on her husband and for the folks on here talking about how different their kids look from their father and them , well you know the real answer there as well.As said why is the mom jabbing ! get a dna test, many comments on here are not racist , some are , mine are not. But a liar is a liar ! for this recessive gene grap how do you explain 99.99% kids look like their parent primarily their dads. The other 10 th look like their moms , if your kids look all over the place , in reality different dads.
Lets get real here folks, there are no other cases out there in the scientific world were two parents of one race gave birth to baby of a different race and a actualy dna test was performed and both were the actual parents we are talking a same race couple here folks not a biracial couple = maybe could have happened and proable. Being Bi racial it is very possible for a white couple to have a biological black child. If they traced their family trees, they would probably find their ancestors owned slaves,had offspring with them so their gene pool expanded, it is also posible visa versa, for a black couple to have a blond haired blue eyed biological child for the same reason.
My twin had two children with a white guy and their daughter has blond hair and brown eyes, she looks white or hispanic.
MJ has three children , are they his biologicaly?
Maybve,maybe not. He can lighten his skin but can not lighten his dna, when his kids are older, they may want to know.

After reading this article and what the author of the book says about the genetics behind race and how it’s passed down….I can see her point of view.
But the real question is..”How likely is it that this child came out of african descent & how many generations(years) did it take to produce the result?” What is the probability that this can happen?
That would be my question. I don’t think anyone can say that they are 100% sure of their origins or complete makeup without taking the actual test.

I’m of mixed Caucasian (Irish & Scottish), African and Indian descent, hailing from the cosmopolitan country of Trinidad & Tobago in the Caribbean. My older brother had blue eyes while mine are brown. As a child I was strawberry blond, but have gradually darkened into adulthood. As a young adult my appearance reflects my hybrid heritage: I am tall, light-skinned and long-faced like a “Nordic” individual, but also have certain obvious non-Caucasian features. My point is that practically anything can happen when you’re dealing with a really mixed gene pool. And in closing let me pose a simple question to all those who are obsessed with genotype and phenotype: What is the racial identity of the radiant spiritual body, the body of redeemed humanity?

There was a show on TV the other day about twins of mixed race parents where one was mixed race and had the same colouring as her parents and the other was white blue eyes blond hair and lighter than both parents. The show stated this could happen with mixed race parents although usually they produce children who look mixed race, because they both have the white and black gene.
Black people have kids who range from all shades, in my family all the males are dark whereas the females are all lighter, so what. You cannot tell what shade of black your child will turn out to be.
I don’t know what kind of problems you have with the women in your life but get over it and move on.
