This is now pushing it a little too far

Posted by Ria, 15 Feb

Back again!! Am hoping the Valentines hangovers are gone by now. Am sure most of us managed to get themselves sick leaves for that. I didn’t and am jealous  Lucky you. Let me spare your ribs today and get back to serious biz.

Find your soulmate on AfroRomance

I picked up this story about an interracial couple (Black wife, white husband) who had gone to a restaurant to have lunch with their kids. No sooner had they sat than another family got up and left without even finishing their meal. As if that wasn’t enough, they felt stares and whispers of nearby customers. The saddest bit is that this is not a story from those fairy tale books that begin with “Long long time ago… when…᾿. It happened recently. :( Good thing is they are comfortable with each other and wouldn’t change each others skin color even if it took just a snapping of fingers.

Are we still regressing or what? Does this mean that interracial couples aren’t allowed to dine in public restaurants or visit public places? And how did the couple interfering with you just by having their meal? Readers, don’t you think this has gone on long enough? All I can say for those with evil eyes and thoughts about this is “Snap out of your culture shock᾿!!

P.S. " Did you wash , your hands " said loud enough to draw attension , may cause some to lower their heads as they leave . LOL - this being a new year with promise of possitive growth for all / May we start to Respects others as we Deserve Respect ourselves .

The Topics of which you speak , Ria . In my Websters - Racialism is the proper spelling , We eat in several restaurants and I tend to be very loud when I talk . One of my favorites " It tastes just like chicken " , no matter what I have ordered and many times others start to laugh . A public forum is not a good place to confront us with distasteful conduct , I pay cash for our food and we tip a the very least 20 % - as I was once a waiter /server in food establishments . Tipping like we do affords us Marvelous service on return visits . And in reality have you ever noticed how many different races are in a packed restaurant during B'fast , Lunch or Dinner hours . If people are pickie as to who eats at the table next to them , Outside dining or take out is available to them .

I heard an interesting story firsthand from someone who was there. Two college age friends go to the movies. He's white, she's African. Leaving the theatre a group of African-American youths ask her why she's with him and then ask him the same when she doesn't respond. He tries to ignore them as well and get into the car. They surround him and slap him to the ground while she runs away. The group runs off when movie security comes outside. True story happened in Richmond, VA

True people will stare but you can either let it get to you or continue to live your life.

I've had people to stare yes. But, I ignore them! Regardless of, what you do, or where you go, at one point or another. Somebody will stare.....Life goes on!

Go to India and see how your interracial relationship is viewed. I can tell you stories about that.

This is really sad.I remember when blacks couldn't rent nice places to live and the places to eat you were not allowed.I have gotten the looks when I'm out at restaurants or the continue to check if you need anything else. Not the normal checking on customers. And yes, it still happens today.

Really Mossimo? I find people in Europe to be much more tolerant of these kinds of relationships. Not that bigotry doesn't exist there, i mean like you said, I guess it just depends where you go.

I hear you Fala. Like I said, I must not be hanging out in those areas. I don't doubt it happens because I hear stories from friends. Also, I don't think its limited to this country as I travel quite a bit and hear things happen in other places as well.

Thanks for the reply Ria. Its funny that i grew up not far from there, but have not lived there in years. People can be so closed minded. Its a wonder we've gotten anywhere at all as a country with all that hate.

Well as you put it, this is just pushing it. I dont know when people are going to realize that colour means no thing. The rainbow has so many colours that coexist. We are human beings. Why cant we all just get along? Getting up and leaving the restaurant coz the other family is interracial shows how some people have no brains on them. And what is the couple teaching their kids? If parents keep on passing such behavior on to their kids, then we may just end up going back to where it all began. And then those of us in such relationships will be so screwed!!

Yeah it's sad that this kind of thing still goes on, but I'm not surprised. Race relations in this country still have a very long way to go.
